Does a gynecological examination hurt?
Many patients arrive at their first gynecological exam anxious about pain, and that anxiety alone can make the visit feel harder than it needs to be. In a routine exam, some pressure and mild discomfort is normal, especially during the speculum part of the exam, but sharp pain is not expected and is worth mentioning to your provider right away. Deep breathing, relaxing the abdominal and pelvic muscles, and communicating openly with your doctor throughout the exam all make a real difference. If you have a history of trauma, vaginismus, or severe anxiety, tell your provider in advance so the exam can be adapted to you. Every body responds differently, and there is no such thing as an oversensitive question when it comes to your comfort.
